Theme:Warmth -- Open for Submissions

The interpretation is up to you. You can capture the "warmth" of human (or animal) emotion during the holiday season, or, if that's a little too much for you, can take it literally (as literally as possible that is...) and send us photographs of flames or stoves or lights or colours or blankets or....

As with all the theme competition images, we are looking for good technique, interpretation of subject and impact in the photograph. And please capture your images within the theme competition date.

Theme: Abstract -- Open for Submissions

Although specifically intended as an exercise to complement the night photography program and Vandusen Gardens Christmas light outing, we are looking for any image that has an "abstract" feel to it. This is usually something that is not recognizable... part of the whole. So think about some techniques, such as zooming... or camera motion... or move in on some lights, or shoot just part of a neon sign... If you prefer to stay out of the dark and cold this time of year, you may also set something up on your dining room table... It should just say "abstract" to the viewers.

Please create your photographs between the theme opening and closing dates.p>

Next Meeting: January 6, 2009

People often forget about Black and White photography in today's colourful digital age. But B&W still has a place in photography and is often more capable of evoking emotion than the same image in colour. B&W can remove distractions, emphasize subjects and change the whole texture of the image's story. Tonight we will explore some of the techniques needed for successful B&W work. Black and White work often requires that you "look" at a scene with different eyes.

Agenda: (subject to change)

B/W Techniques (Russ & Wendy Kwan):
Russ and Wendy are certified CAPA judges as well as award-winning B&W artists. They will share some of their secrets to those who want to learn.
If you need proof of their credentials, just visit their website which has galleries of their wonderful images.

Next outing: Dec 14, 2008 -- Van Dusen Festival of Lights

Subjects:
A night shoot at the Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver to work on how to capture the magic of the lights.

Logistics:
Carpools will meet at the school at 3:15 p.m. We will plan to leave the school at 3:30 p.m. to arrive at 4:30 p.m. This way we will catch some nice (hopefully) light before it gets totally dark. Cost is $11.00 per adult (for 10 or more it is $8.50 - so meet us there and we can get a deal on the entrance fee). If you want to go earlier we will likely see you there. Depending on weather we will see how long we are out.

Details:
Check out the website for more details.

Club Xmas Party: Dec 10

Our annual pot-luck christmas party. Open to paid members and their spouses (or invited guests).

Time: 6:30 PM
Location:

Queen's Park Centennial Lodge (same building as the Arts Centre)

Link to PDF Map of Park Area

Link to Google Map (you should see the lodge marked on the map).

As usual, we will have our fund-raising silent auction. Proceeds go to offset operating costs and towards the equipment fund.

In Preparation:

Bring a healthy appetite!

Bring a food dish to feed other healthy appetites

Bring a non-perishable food item as a donation to the local food banks.

Bring in your best unwanted (photographic?) stuff for the silent auction.

Bring cash to buy other members' best unwanted (photographic?) stuff at the silent auction.

Members may bring in print portfolios if they wish to share what they've been doing with other members. These will be placed on a table for general browsing. We suggest folders or binders with 8x10 sized prints, preferably in some sort of protective covering to protect from sticky fingers!
